What is the best age to start martial arts training?

I’ve had a parent call asking if she could start her 2 year old son?

If you are like most parents, you probably have seen your kids jumping around throwing chops and kicks after watching Ninjago, Ninja Turtles, or Power Rangers.

Usually, parents want to get their children involved in some type of activity around 3 or 4 year olds.

Most sports start at this age and some even younger.

I think 4 years old is the perfect age to start.

Developmentally, they can grasp and retain concepts taught on the mat.

The biggest constraint for martial arts owners is the curriculum for this age.

They struggle with teaching kids this age the curriculum.

It wasn’t until I changed the curriculum to accommodate how this age group learns did my four to six year old class take off.

At Alamo Ranch Martial Arts we offer a program specifically designed for 4-6 years of age.

We call it our Knee High Ninja program.

The emphasis is on character development with basic concepts of martial arts.

There are 3 main life skills we emphasize in their age group:

1.  Discipline of knowing when to use martial arts and when not to.

2.  How to focus their energy in a positive direction.

3.  Develop better listening skills at home, school, and karate.

By creating a foundation of discipline, focus, and better listening skills during these early years, we set students up for success later in life.

It is like giving your child a head start in life!
